Korean sunscreens generally mean being inclusive of a broad spectrum. At this point, you probably know what that is. Typically, the sunscreen is inclusive of protecting you from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

But when I call them broad spectrum, I’m also saying they’re inclusive of skin types, skin tones and skin concerns. That is what makes Korean sunscreens for every part of your body.

Technically, Koreans avoid going too much in the skin and also use minimal sunscreen on their body, but more about that later. For now let’s find out when they do, what they use.

Top Korean Sunscreens For Body

COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50 PA+++

The first one on this list of best Korean sunscreens for body is by COSRX.

In the past, I have noticed that most sunscreens cause breakouts on my face. When something you use to shield you doesn’t do the job, it can leave you pretty miffed. This sunscreen, however, was a real saviour. The inclusion of aloe in the formulation kept my skin’s health at bay and you’re already looking at the broad spectrum it covers.

Of course, it didn’t leave a white cast. Despite its creamy formulation, it felt very light on the skin. I also wore it under my makeup from time to time on days I wanted to keep a natural look. It’s smooth gliding, so using it over the rest of the body doesn’t feel patchy either.

Suntique I’m Pure Cica Suncream SPF 50 PA++++

It is hard to find a sunscreen that doesn’t make you feel oily or sticky if you stay in the sun for too long. To feel that way on the face is one thing, but the entire body? Yech. This Korean Suntique sunscreen was a blessing! You Only need a thin layer. The cherry on top — it gives you a matte finish! Those shiny forehead days are gone.

I absolutely love the inclusion of cica in this sunscreen. It has anti-inflammatory properties that just gives my skin an additional layer of protection.

Dr. Oracle 21 STAY A-Thera Sunblock SPF 50 PA+++

The next one on this list of best Korean sunscreens for body is Dr Oracle.

Ah, my peeps! If you face body acne or want to lay in a bikini on a beach with sensitive acne-prone skin, this is the cream for you. I have faced a lot of acne issues in the past.

My doctor recommended this to me on my trip to Mexico because I complained about how wavy any other sunscreen feels. Normal sunscreens can also block your pores. It is only downhill from there for people with acne.

This Dr. oracle sunscreen, a Korean formulation, is completely hypoallergenic. It has Bamboo and Maca peptide that keeps your skin hydrated and a Lock N’ Pore complex that regulates sebum production in addition to protecting your skin from the sun. It’s a small tube, but it does wonders!

MISSHA — All Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk SPF50+/PA+++

The next one on this list of best Korean sunscreens for body is MISSHA

Have you heard of this beauty trend called blurring? It generally blurs your blemishes to seem like you have none. This Korean sunscreen has that kind of effect. I was going to Bali and I was going to be around the water a lot (yeah I vacation quite a bit — don’t be jealous!), so it didn’t make sense to wear makeup (except for pictures).

So I thought, why not do some research, find a sunscreen that not only protects me, but also acts as a mild make-up formula? Nothing in this is toxic. It just has a milky consistency that puts on a protective layer to put on a smooth base.

I know it will be hard to believe, but despite this, it doesn’t leave a white cast on the face, even on slightly darker skin tones. It has helichrysum water to calm your skin and antozone-rose to protect it. A small quantity is more than enough. Its runny consistency helps it spread easily.

ACWELL UV CUT Mild Sun Fluid SPF 50+ PA++++

This one falls slightly in the splurge range, but a lot of celebrities swear by it. My mother seems to love it as well. She’s old and has a lot of skin damage. Not only did it provide her skin protection, it also helped reverse some of her damage. Her skin feels hydrated and any inflammation is at an arm’s length.

The best part about this sunscreen is that it has no sulphates, dyes, or even mineral oil. It’s absolutely safe for those with sensitive skin.

How to Choose the best Korean Sunscreens for Body:

Ingredients

When a product is doing more than one thing, it makes you want to come back to it. Other than sun protection when you see that a Korean sunscreen has other ingredients that would help prevent breakouts, or calm inflammation or benefit your complexion, buy it!

Niacinamide in my sunscreen is one of my most favourite inclusions. In addition to that, the COSRX sunscreen offers an aloe combination which I have raved enough about already.

Sunscreens with hyaluronic acid will keep your skin hydrated for a longer duration. However,  using that does not mean you can skip moisturizer altogether.

Ratings

Looking for a high SPF rating is the single most important thing in sunscreen. Your skin damage starts off with tanning and sunburns. Technically, the darker your skin, the lesser you have the chance of skin issues, but you need protection nonetheless.

When you pick an SPF 30 sunscreen, you are protecting yourself from 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. An additional SPF of SPF 50 gives you only one additional percent of protection. However, in terms of compounding, SPF 30 will slow down your skin’s damage by 30 times, but SPF 50 will do so 50 times. SO it is always better to go for the higher ones.

Just an SPF isn’t enough though. A PA rating will save your life. Addition of PA protection ensures you’re protected from various signs of ageing. The more the number of plus signs you have in front of PA, the higher the protection. If you’re buying a broad-spectrum sunscreen, make sure you’re buying at least SPF 30 or above.

Texture

This is probably one of the most important factors to consider while choosing your sunscreen. It determines how much you’re going to commit to applying it on your face everyday. I’ve had runny, almost milky sunscreens that my skin absorbs effortlessly, and I’ve seen sunscreens that seem chalky and leave a cakey finish on my face an hour after application.ones that leave white cast are the worst.

There is no perfect tecue, it all depends on how comfortable your skin is with it and the weather conditions that you live in.

Types of Sunscreen

Predominantly, there are two types of sunscreen —  Mineral and Chemical.

Mineral Sunscreen

In some places, you’ll see that mineral sunscreens are also known as physical sunscreens. It’s because they create a physical barrier between the sun and your skin. In other words, they are inorganic. They have zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that bounce off the sun rays completely. They start working the second you put them on your skin.

Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens on the other hand, need at least 15-30 minutes to start working. Allow yourself that much time gap before you expose yourself to the sun. Chemical sunscreens take all the UV rays against your skin and convert them into heat.

Dermatologists usually recommend that you use a hybrid of these ingredients for best results.

Why do Koreans stress so much on applying sunscreens?

You’ve heard of ‘prevention is better than cure’, well the Koreans live it. They think preventing your skin from damage is better than spending more than half of your adult life repairing your skin. The only way they go is up. Sun is the biggest source of skin damage, so from a  very young age, Koreans have ingrained into everyone’s brains that applying sunscreen is a ritualistic thing. It’s like taking a health supplement or drinking water.

Reapply every two hours

For reasons I mentioned above, you can see Koreans topping off their sunscreen needs every couple of hours, ensuring not a single ray of light has the nerve! You should do it too — the effectiveness of the sunscreen wears off in a few hours especially if you’re outdoors.

Best Koreans Sunscreens for Body: FAQs

Do Koreans really wear sunscreen on their entire body?

Generally, when the Koreans head out, they try to cover up their skin as much as they can. They wear full length clothes, carry an umbrella, wear shades and walk under canopies. Never are they outside for more than half an hour at a stretch.  However, whatever parts of the body that remain uncovered, are slathered in sunscreen. Fingertips, behind the ears, and even toes.

Can I skip moisturizer and use sunscreen?

Most sunscreens these days are made with a moisturizing base. So yes, it is safe to skip a moisturizer, however, if you are of dry skin type, I wouldn’t recommend that. If you don’t want to layer too much, just look for a good moisturizer with an SPF.

Should you rub or pat sunscreen?

The best way to apply sunscreen is to dot it all over your skin, and pat it in. This way you ensure that the product is spread evenly across your entire face.
