Portraying the story of the battle held in the Yellow Sea, The Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the movie takes us deep into the war where a lot of lives were lost on both sides. The story especially focuses on the lives of many young soldiers who fought and died for their country.

This true story has been captured beautifully by the director and the cinematographer, bringing us as close to reality as it can be possible.

Ode to My Father

Ode to my Father is not set in war time but parts of the movie depict both Vietnam war and the Korean war. It actually reminded me of Forrest Gump and how the movie portrays his time in the Vietnam war where he meets Lieutenant Dan.

Ode to my Father revolves around how Deok-soo escapes North Korean during the Hungman Evacuation. After which he finds himself in the middle of urban bombings in Vietnam.

Ode to my Father is not only a great watch for the war movie lovers but also a good watch for history buffs!

My Way

My Way or “Mai Wei” is a Korean war movie based on the World War II period where Korea and Japan went into war with the Soviets.

The story is loosely based on the true incidents that occured when Yang Kyoungjong, a young Korean soldier was enlisted first into the Japanese military, then the soviet military and finally forcefully into the German military during World War II. He was caught by the American paratroopers eventually.

The movie follows his life as he was enlisted into each of these military regiments and showcases the various forms of combat across these regiments. There’s plenty of killing, blood shed and gore in this movie, and therefore suitable only for adults or a mature audience.

Operation Chromite

Director: John H.Lee | Age Rating: 15+ | Release Date: 26th December 2016 | Duration: 1hr 51min

Operation Chromite is a popular Korean war movie that I’m sure many war movie enthusiasts would have heard of, and even watched. If you haven’t already, make sure you line this up for your next movie session cos this is one you should not be missing.

Operation Chromite is based on the Battle of Incheon, and the movie is called “Incheon Sangryuk Jakjeon” in Korean. The story follows a group of South Koreans impersonating North Korean troops to infiltrate the camp and gain intelligence on plans and maps.

The movie is quite predictable as they run into problems and the combats that follow. Liam Neeson is a pleasing surprise as he plays the role of General Doughlas Macarthur.

Steel Rain

Director: Woosuk Yang | Age Rating: 15+ | Release Date: 14th December 2017 | Duration: 2hr 19min

While a lot of Korean War films are loosely based or inspired by true incidents and stories, Steel Rain is a work of fiction. The movie is very entertaining, fast paced and engaging, managing to keep the viewer hooked at all times.

Woosuk Yang, the director has outdone himself with this brilliant masterpiece. The story follows a North Korean spy who teams up with a South Korean Bureaucrat to stop the US troops from waging a nuclear war on Korea.

A lot of English and Hollywood movies are about the USA fighting off other countries, so this is quite refreshing to watch. For all those who watch war movies for the tanks, bombers, helicopters and other hardware, this movie has those and plenty more. It doesn’t have too many battle scenes though, but I’m sure you will be satisfied with whatever it’s got.

A Little Pond

Director: Sang-woo Lee | Age Rating: 15+ | Release Date: 15th April 2010 | Duration: 1hr 26 min

A Little Pond is not a typical war movie with battles and combats, rather, it’s more of a memoir of the people who died during the “No Gun Ri Massacre”. The massacre was an important part of the Korean war as it affected many lives and ended up being a turning point.

The No Gun Ri Massacre was an incident that was kept under wraps for many years. It involved the Americans shooting hundreds of innocent South Koreans who they believed were protecting North Koreans infiltrators. When this incident finally came to light, the whole of South Korea developed a hatred towards the Americans.

The movie is based on the stories of few of the people who were killed during the time and is beautifully shot. The cinematography and editing is tight, and the film is shorter than many traditional Korean war movies.

White Badge

Director: Ji-yeong Jeong | Age Rating: 15+ | Release Date: 1992 | Duration: 2hrs 4 min

White badge is based on the autobiography of a South Korean veteran named Ahn Jung-hyo, who fought in the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war is as important to the Koreans as the Korean war. This is because South Korea deployed many of its soldiers to fight for America against the Vietnamese.

This has also left a bitter taste in the mouth for many Koreans as the then South Korean military dictator, Park Chung-Hee used the favour to extract support from the USA against North Korea.

The movie portrays the bitterness of the Vietnamese war, the bloodshed of the Korean soldiers, the fiery battlefields, the traumas undergone by the soldiers and how it affected them even after they were back home. The movie was shot in 1992, a few years after the end of the Vietnam war.

In Love and The War

Sometimes it’s nice to give the stress and seriousness a break and watch a war movie with a little bit of romance in it. “In Love and The War” (roughly translated from the Korean title) is a light hearted war movie that has a bit of comedy and romance mixed with the seriousness of war.

This fictitious story starts with a group of North Korean troops who enter a South Korean village amidst the Korean war. While we watch the interactions between the villagers and the troops, we discover that the commander of the North Korean troops is looking for a girl from the village he met and knew before the war.

The movie follows his hunt while there is a war waging in the background.

What is surprising is that the people of the village are so oblivious to what is going on in the rest of the country that they are surprised to see armed South and North Korean troops land in their village.

This Korean war movie was a great watch with comedy, drama and war scenes overlapping with each other. They use pranks and humour to cope with the horrendous war situations. It’s one of the best Korean movies that you’ll ever watch because of how the plot is executed.

The movie is focussed on 3 army surgeons who stitch in casualties during the war time. The movie was released in 1970 and is famous till date. Mash is directed by Robert Altman.

The Bridges at Toko-Ri

The Bridges at Toko-Ri is one of the best Korean war movies to enjoy about the Korean War. The story is about Lt. Harry Brubaker who takes the risk to fly over North Korea with his rescue crew’s support. It’s a horrendous bombing mission that holds you back as you watch the movie.

The ending of this war builds a lot of tension as to what’s gonna happen, will the lieutenant and his team be successful or not? It’s a great movie to learn about the Korean war. The movie exhibits the value of courage over failure.

How to Use Retinol With Korean Skin care

Retinol is a strong and mostly the main active – it doesn’t sit very well when combined with other main actives. Like AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin C, etc. It is recommended to be used at night and followed by using and reusing sunscreen throughout the day.

Since retinol is a potent ingredient, it can sensitise the skin, hence, it is imperative to protect your skin from harsh UVA and UVB rays the next day. Keep skin covered and not going out during the day are also some measures to be taken.

Using retinol regularly can make your skin appear dry and flaky which is, again, pretty normal and not to be too worried about. Skin takes some time to adjust to new actives, especially strong actives like retinol.

It might take a little while to adjust but once your skin acclimatizes with the said ingredients, the results are just wonderful.

When and How To Start Retinol With Korean Skincare

Since retinol is such a potent ingredient, it’s not always for everyone. If you have sensitive or acne prone skin, you should first try to bring the skin barrier up.

In short, hydrate and make the skin barrier stronger as one of the characteristics of retinol is that the top layer of the skin becomes sensitive and hence to an already sensitive skin it can cause severe damage.

If you are very well motivated and are willing to follow the way it should be used then I recommend you to start using it in your late 20s and early 30s, that’s when the preventive anti-aging methods should be used.

Integrate the retinol/ retinoids for that matter very slowly and gently. Start slowly with the lower percentage and use it say twice or thrice a week.

I will also discuss the difference between Retinol and Retinoic Acid.

Retinoic acid is stronger than the natural derivative Retinol, though both are derived from Vitamin A, potency and thus efficacy matters.

Retinolis is less potent and provides slower effects but that also means that it is less harsher to the skin and is also available over the counter without prescription.

Retinoic acid which is also known as Tretinoin requires prescription and is way stronger and hence, should be only taken under guidance.

These ingredients are so popular even though they require such discipline and can cause sensitivity to the skin because they work – they boost collagen production and help evening out the skin tone, then why is it that Koreans don’t incorporate Retinol in their skincare.

It contains natural peptides which help in boosting collagen production in skin which as discussed above, helps in increasing the cell renewal rate.

Snail mucin also contains hyaluronic acid and natural glycolic acid (very limited quantity) too which means it provides hydration and also works on hyperpigmentation.

It makes it a great opponent to use retinol, even though it is milder and slower in showing the results, since it’s gentler, Koreans are in favour of it.

Ceramides

Ceramides are naturally available in our skin and their job is to retain moisture and maintain skin elasticity.

While it’s good to use retinol for longer periods of time because the skin takes time to adjust to the ingredient, it is best to use retinol less during the summer. This is because of the risk of sunburn and increased photosensitivity.

I’ve watched all these Korean movies as I’m a big fan but I found Parasite to be the best Korean movie because of it’s plot, characters, themes and screenplay. Here’s why:

Parasite is an Academy Award winning movie under various categories. This movie is a thriller comedy about the Kim family who sees an opportunity to work in the wealthy Park family. All of them symbiotically join to work under Park family by any means and start living a parasitic life. It subtly shows bold themes like class discrimination and greed. It’s a hilarious watch. Parasite is available to watch on Amazon Prime.

He’s released all of a sudden and all his motive is to kill his captivator within 5 days. This movie is extremely captivating with lots of suspense that will keep you hooked to the movie. Watch it with your friends and family when you’ve a free mind to understand the movie better.

The movie is sadistic, mysterious and captivating.

Memories of Murder

As detectives they solve various rapes and murder cases in Korea around 1986. Another detective joins them from another country as they solve to find the 3rd murder case that leads them to the killer.

The Handmaiden

This plan however, takes emotional turns in the way and a lot changes in between. This movie is a must watch if you’re looking for something romantic as well as mystery and thriller in between.

Parasite

An unusual disease seems to spread and a mysterious stranger is supposedly the reason. The local police solve the mystery as murders continue to happen. It’s a perfect movie to watch if you’re into the horror genre as it has every element of it.

The Chaser

This Korean tale is about a police officer who is always disregarded and is now retired. He runs his own prostitution raquet.

A lot of girls escape and run away from the brothel without letting him know after realising that they’re not getting what they were owed and are trapped with a psychopath serial killer. The police officer is stuck in his own race against time to find them before it’s too late.

The Chaser is one of the best movies that I’ve ever seen and I’d recommend it to everyone who loves watching action packed with thrillers.

Thirst

Genre: Horror, Romance, Drama | Duration: 2hrs 14 mins | Editor’s Rating: 7.1

Thirst is one of the most famous Korean movies full of horror, romance as well as drama and directed by Chan- wook Park. It’s about a priest who works at a hospital and joins the mission of secret vaccination.

The project goes wrong and due to some emergency transfusion, the priest turns into a vampire who develops the taste of blood and unleashes his darkest desire through it. This is a must watch if you like vampire movies.

The Way Home

This is a very old heartwarming Korean movie that you’d love to watch with kids or your grandparents. It’s about a boy Sang-woo who is consumed in this modern technology and has no idea how it is living without it.

When he’s forced to live with grandmother, he’s taken back to see that there’s no electricity, restaurants etc. He discouranges his grandma’s attempt to please him but with him he understands her loving gestures and awakens his understanding.

This movie will remind you of your grandparents and you, for sure. It’s one of the top Korean movies of all times.

A Bittersweet Life

A Bittersweet Life is packed with action, crime and drama, directed by Kim Jee-woon. This movie is about a Korean mobster who doesn’t listen to his boss’s orders.

This movie is amazing because it doesn’t glorify gangsters but rather covers what actually happens upon betrayal. This movie has a great suspense where you can find light in the darkest places.

A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters is a psychological thriller, suspense and drama. After spending a lot of time in a mental hospital, the two sisters reunite to find that their mother has passed away and her ghost is still haunting the house.

The girls deal with a horrific situation with their step mom. This story has a blurring boundary between horror and psychological thriller which will hold you back till the very end.

Secret Reunion

Secret Reunion is another best Korean movie with an extremely amazing plot by Hun Jung. This story is about a reunion of years after the North Korean spy reunited with a South Korean Agent for some freelance detective work.

Hide and Seek is a Korean movie that has amazing mystery and thriller elements that will keep you hooked till the very end. This is about a man who has everything but is going through Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as well as insomnia.

His brother goes missing and as he sets out to find him, he is encountered with a shocking truth under a mysterious apartment. Go watch the movie before I spill the spoilers because this movie has kept me hooked for a good time.
